Light holds light
Where we signal light beyond
what we trust we are
a mirrored momentum
in our sky-blue magnitude
We can hold more light than we ever imagine. Even in the most challenging circumstances we can hold more light than we think. We are like an ever expanding stream that is able to contain more and more water. The limit is only in our mind.
When we start healing ourselves, unexpected obstacles and old issues that we thought we had dealt with tend to come to the surface. A multitude of such challenges have been appearing on my path. Here is an example: A couple of months ago I had a small problem with my car and took it to the garage. They fixed a few things. When I was expecting to get it back, I found out they had an accident with the car during a test drive leading to a significant damage. For more than six weeks I waited to get it back. A number of events unfolded around insurance, unfulfilled promises, lawyers and above all my own anger and frustration about the situation. Whatever intentions I set for myself, I felt an escalating frustration about it, as from my perspective the behaviour of the other party breached all principles of responsibility and honesty. I was not able to uphold a constructive tone in conversations on the matter. It was a typical situation where your own interpretation and reaction to a situation creates a negative energy spiral around it and blocks the solutions. I knew I had to get out of the negative momentum around it to open up a pathway for it to unblock. Bit by bit I got myself there, applying the body of work I am developing and learning. A few days ago I got my car back, though some issues are yet to be solved.
To start with I had to keep a more neutral perspective on the issue, letting go of the meaning and significance I attached to the situation including the taxi rides I was undertaking. It’s not easy to step from anger into love. Therefore in such a situation the first step is to create a level of equanimity. Once we have done that, we can gradually hold more light about it, developing an inner understanding about how it contributes to our learning and growth. We can gradually hold more peacefulness and more love about it, until it becomes only a condition within our broader journey which does not affect our wellbeing.
We tend to hold as much light as our conditions seem to offer us. In that way our thoughts and emotions become a mirror of these conditions. Our conditions then mirror these thoughts and emotions back to us. It’s a sort of endless mirroring back and forward between our perceived conditions and our state of being.
It is not easy to break the ceiling of our situations and conditions with our mind. The situation may seem anyway it may seem, unfair and illogical and all the rest, like the situation described above. The way we feel about it is ultimately the way we think about it. So we have to get beyond ourselves and our own logical conclusions. Holding more light is never a logical thing to do. It’s a heart-centred way of approaching our live. It requires two things: Transforming the story about things into a story that holds more light and allowing ourselves to feel more light about it. More than we perceive we can hold.
PRACTICE
Identify a situation that is currently creating some friction for you. Create an intention to develop more light about the situation. When you feel anger about it, breathe deeply and allow yourself to see that you are learning something from it. Every situation we face contains some learning. Then let is just be. When you feel calmer about it, you can practice the following: Focus on your heart. Imagine you are putting the situation inside your heart and start surrounding it with peaceful light and love. Trust that when you let in a little light, more light with join.
